Nov 5 2006
Every first Sunday of November is the time for New York City
Marathon – world biggest marathon. This year, on 5th November about 34 000 participants are expected.
Some of them are professionals some are amateurs. It’s known that it’s possible
to run only few marathons per year. So, there are not so many chances to become
a marathon winner, but this title is very prestigious. As New York marathon is
one of the main events of its kind, all the real pretenders for the victory try
to be in their best form by November. There is another part of the runners –
they don’t try to overcome some record time, their main aim is to come to
finish. Not all of them will succeed, but all those who will have courage to
start can be proud of themselves. It not just the race – it’s the serious
examination for the will. It’s a challenge and (to be honest) an opportunity to
gain the moment of glory. The marathon starts at Fort Wadsworth, on Staten
Island. Then the route passes through all the five boroughs of New York City -
Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan. The history of this
marathon began in a distant 1970. Since that time the amount of the runners has
grown a lot, and the route has changed seriously. Fame and sport excitement are
not the only things the successful runners will get. The prize now constitutes
600,000 dollars that is a very serious sum. The event has also become a popular
show broadcasted to 315 million worldwide television viewers.
