Of the greatest event in the world of cycling - Giro d’Italia also
known as Giro – finishes in Milan on
June 3. It take place annually and last for over three weeks. The route comes
through the whole Italy. There are three main cycling races in the world and
Giro is one of them. The other two are Tour de France and Vuelta a España.
The first Giro d’Italia started on May 13, 1909 at Milan with eight
stages totalling 2,448 kilometres (1,521 miles). It was an Italian answer to
Tour de France from the editor of La Gazzetta dello Sport Emilio Camillo
Costamagna. The first winner was Luigi Ganna.
In many kinds of sport the
current leader in classification wears special yellow T-shirt, but Italians like
to create its own style and they made it for Giro too. The pages of La Gazzetta
dello Sport were pink and the overall leader in the Giro received pink jersey or
maglia rosa in Italian. Separate attention during Giro is paid to the mountain
stages of the race and the winner of this part of the competition gets
green jersey (or maglia verde).
