Every year in May-June Paris hosts one of the four “Grand Slam” tournaments -
Roland Garros which is also called French Open. Rolland Garros is the premier
clay court tennis tournament in the world.
Roland Garros received its
name after its stadium, which is in turn was named after the World War I pilot.
French Open was born in 1891. In 1925 it opened its doors to international
competitors.
The clay cover of the courts produces a higher bounce then
grass courts and demands special skills. Such great players as Pete Sampras and
Roger Federer have never won this title, although they have almost all the other
awards in the world. Federer have good changes to change situation this year. He
takes part in Roland Garros and he is still in the play. He is tennis player
number one nowadays, but clay courts never suite him best. Number one on this
cover is Spanish Rafael Nadal who was the winner of Roland Garros
already.
As for female part of the competition, there are too many good players to
predict who’s the real favorite. All the girls from top ten surely have chances
to win. By the way, French Open has good news for them – this year it will
provide an equal amount of prize money for both men and women in all rounds.
