The second oldest film festival in the world Moscow
International Film Festival (MIFF) will be held from June 21 till June 30 in the
capital of Russia. From 1959 to 1995 it was held every second year in July.
Since 1995 it became annual. The main prize of the festival is the statue of
Saint George slaying the dragon. The most famous film to win the top prize of
the festival is Federico Fellini’s 8½. Since 2000 famous Russian actor and
director Nikita Mikhalkov has been the festival’s president.
MIFF is one of the most prestigious festivals in
the world. In 1972 it received “A” class and is in the row with such “grandees”
as festivals in Berlin, Cannes, San Sebastian, Karlovy Vary and Venice. The
organizer of the festival is the government of Russia.
This year the festival plans retrospectives of
Robert Oltman, Emir Custurica and Milos Forman and the panorama of Italian
cinema. Special retrospectives will be devoted to the “Golden Age” of the
Hollywood musicals and Soviet films of 1991, made just before the break up of
the Soviet Union.
