Expert Tip. Downtown Austin's Congress Ave. bridge over Town Lake is home to approximately 1.5 million bats, the largest urban bat colony in North America. One of Austin's most popular attractions, it can take as long as 45 minutes for the Mexican free-tailed bats to exit the bridge. Flights can be witnessed at sunset as early as March and last through late September/early October.
